1 – The Niagara Falls consists of three sections, all labeled differently. The largest is located in Ontario, Canada and is known as “Horseshoe Falls”. The second and third in terms of size are both located on the American side of the falls and are known as “American Falls” and “Bridal Veil Falls” respectively.

2 – The Niagara Falls is claimed to be 18’000 years old, from the last Ice Age.

3 – The Niagara River has a distinct green color due to the dissolved minerals and fine rock particles known as ‘rock flour’.

4 – The Niagara River water is used for fishing, drinking, tourist activities, hydroelectric power generation, industrial cooling, etc.

5 – The Falls have been visited by world-famous celebrities, e.g. Christopher Reeve, Shirley Temple-Black, royalties such as Princess Diana and sons, King George VI, and Princess Margaret as well as writers such as of Mark Twain and Charles Dickens.

6 - It is a common sight to see Rainbows as the sun reflects from the waters of the falls.

7 – In 1948 the Horseshoe Falls stopped for 30 hours.

8 – The phenomenal “Ice Bridge” created by strong winds and wet ice is an annual occurrence and this spectacular view is enjoyed by many tourists and photographers.

9 – Massive and powerful Whirlpool Rapids are created at the Great Gorge by large volumes of water from the falls.

10 - The hydro-power generation greatly reduces erosion of The Falls.

History

The Niagara River is known to have existed since the last Ice Age which is close to almost 200 centuries ago. With time, the ice melted and about 12’500 years ago ice there was no longer any ice on the Niagara Peninsula.
